The better care you take of your car, the longer it will take care of you. A vehicle that is well-maintained can go for well over 100,000 miles. All it takes to care for it correctly is knowing about the essentials your vehicle needs. These include motor oil, radiator, transmission, power steering, brake and AC fluids. All of them help your vehicle perform at its absolute best.

Motor Oil – The oil pump and engine oils are the heart and blood of your vehicle, respectively. An engine without the right amount of oil will die. Buy the right blend for your car according to your owner’s manual and keep it appropriately filled. Ideally, you should be checking your level regularly once a month. The old adage of changing oil every three months or 3,000 miles still holds true for many used cars, but a lot of newer vehicles are engineered to go even longer. Or, you may decide to directly take it to your friendly mechanics at Absolute Car Care and allow us to take care of it for you.

Radiator Fluid – Keep your engine from overheating and have the radiator tank filled with distilled water and antifreeze up to the fill line. For most vehicles, a glycol-based antifreeze coolant is the best type of coolant to be used in any vehicle radiator. However, using the glycol based antifreeze alone is usually not a good idea. A radiator flush should be done every other year or every 40,000 to 60,000 miles. Old antifreeze can become acidic, eating away at the cooling system from the inside out.

Transmission Fluid – Transmission fluid does for the transmission what oil does for the engine. It lubricates the moving parts and prevents build-up by acting as a cleaning agent. It also helps cool the transmission. This red or green liquid needs to be replaced about every 30,000 to 60,000 miles on some cars, and on others – never. Ask our car repair experts for advice, and we will examine your vehicle and give you a precise diagnosis of what the problem with your transmission system might be and what it will take to fix it.

Power Steering Fluid – Having a hard time turning the steering wheel? Are your wheels squeaking when you steer? That is a sign that you need to fill up the power steering fluid. Follow your car manufacturer’s recommendations – A good habit is to check the power steering fluid once a month or so—when you check your oil—to make sure it’s at the right level. If there’s a leak, you may notice drops on the ground beneath the front end. If your steering wheel is difficult to turn or you hear a whining noise when turning, check your fluid level. There is no warning light on the dash for this fluid, so it’s important that you remember to check the level regularly.

Brake Fluid – Are your brakes squeaking, grinding, clunking? Do they feel ‘squishy’ or unresponsive? Don’t wait! Get them looked at by a trained professional at Absolute Car Care. If you don’t, you could be doing further damage to your brakes: drums, calipers or rotors. Your brake system is hydraulic, meaning it uses fluid to create pressure. That pressure moves the braking components—under extreme pressure and temperature—to cause the vehicle to stop. Most newer cars have a red warning light on the dash to indicate a problem. If you have a brake problem, get to our repair shop ASAP. Don’t take a chance when it comes to your brakes, and our mechanics will make sure you get back on the road with safe, noise-free brakes.

AC Fluids – You can drive your car safely without enough of this as long as you do not run the air on a hot day, but who wants that? The AC needs refrigerant and the coolant. The refrigerant makes the atmosphere inside the car nice and fresh. The coolant keeps your engine from overheating. R-134a and R-12 are common coolants that are used in your system. It’s fairly common for your car to need a top-off every so often. Our mechanics at Absolute Car Care go through a multi-point check of your AC system to ensure that you will stay cool.
